Turnkey Chemical Feed Solution for New Residential Community
Providing Clean Water to a Growing City
A new master-planned community in Collin County, TX, features 353 single-family homes and the new infrastructure to support the area’s growth. The city added a 0.6-million-gallon storage tank to hold pretreated water, a booster pump with skid, and chemical dosing equipment to meet the region's growing water demand. The new storage tank and booster station are essential for providing clean and consistent water across the development.
Shelter Works worked with Environmental Improvements, Inc. (EI²) to deliver two turnkey chemical feed systems for secondary disinfection at the booster station. This collaboration emphasizes the importance of a reliable, durable solution for water treatment. Shelter Works’ fiberglass enclosures provided the ideal housing for sensitive chemical feed equipment, ensuring safety and performance over the long term.
One of the shelters houses chlorine feed equipment, while the other houses liquid ammonium sulfate (LAS), both essential for water treatment. Chlorine eliminates harmful pathogens, making water safe for consumption, while ammonia, when combined with chlorine, forms chloramines, a long-lasting disinfectant that prevents recontamination as the water travels through the distribution system.
Chemical Feed Safety Precautions
Chlorine and ammonia work together in water for disinfection; however, when combined in gas form, they produce harmful gases that cause irritating and harmful fumes that can result in a hazardous situation. For this reason, each chemical feed system has a dedicated, secure chemical storage enclosure with a ventilation system designed to ensure safe air circulation. Intake fans at the top of the wall bring fresh air from a higher elevation into the shelter, forcing heavier gases that settle near the floor to vent through lower exhaust points.
The 8 ft x 10 ft x 8 ft shelters also have wood-reinforced walls for added structural support, allowing EI² to mount their chemical feed equipment easily. Electrical packages include load centers, receptacles, and exterior-mounted switches that control interior LED lighting and the air intake fans. A window in the door of each shelter allows for easy equipment inspection from outside the shelters during maintenance checks.
Why Shelter Works
When asked about his experience working with Shelter Works on this project, Derek Willms at EI² stated, "Overall, the installation went really well! We pre-installed all our equipment inside the shelter to provide a turnkey solution for the contractor. When the pre-assembled shelter arrived on site, the contractor stated, "This is going to be easy." This is exactly the reaction we want, and we thank Shelter Works for always providing us with a quality product our customers can be proud of."
